Apollo 11 Fever Grips San Francisco as Flags Fly
Mayor Joseph Alioto urges all residents to fly the Stars and Stripes day and night from blastoff until splashdown. He calls for bells and sirens to sound at splashdown. Hadley Roff notes the flag may fly at night as the Star Spangled Banner was written for night display. On USS Hornet the moon bug risk is deemed negligible by quarantined team members Dr. William Carpentier and John Hirasaki.

Apollo 11 Launch Sets Moon Mission in Motion
NASA astronauts Armstrong Aldrin and Collins ascended from Cape Kennedy aboard a Saturn 5, entering Earth orbit to begin the first manned mission toward the moon. The crew will circle Earth for 214 hours, then head toward the moon with the goal of a July landing and historic lunar walk.
Agnew Proposes Mars as Next Space Goal
Vice President Spiro Agnew floated a Mars mission as America’s next space target while Apollo 11 astronauts prepared to land on the moon. He favored Mars over Venus, saying it seems more compatible, and joined 500 guests at Cape Kennedy for the launch. The presidential committee on space planning includes Paine Seamans and DuBridge and will report to President Nixon this fall. Former President Johnson also attended.

Apollo 11 flight barely noted by Moscow papers
Moscow newspapers largely ignored the upcoming Apollo 11 moon flight with Literaturnaya Gazeta the only outlet mentioning it in a reprint from a French magazine. Luna 15’s unmanned mission also faced silence though some Soviet sources hinted at soil sampling. Vatican radio defended Apollo 11 costs while urging focus on peace and poverty.
