Old Time Watch and Its History in Latrobe Circus Visit
Geo W Filton the Latrobe postmaster visited the circus and discussed a long carried timepiece with a Messenger representative. The Elgin watch, valued at $40 with a silver case, was presented about 1865 to Elmer Bowles for faithful service by the Messenger manager. Bowles later left his estate to heirs, an ante nuptial contract with widow Shannon led to her care, and after Bowles died around 1875 the watch passed through several hands until I bought it for $15. It has rarely needed repairs and keeps perfect time compared with a chronometer.
