A Boston Recorder miscellany tale recounts Johnny sharing bread with a blind man and hungry girl then receiving aid from a benevolent neighbor. Johnny learns faith and prayer can bring daily bread and comfort, while his mother gains renewed hope as they await provision.
A letter from July 1863 defends Gen. Milroy over Winchester combat reports. The writer disputes 12 000 vs 14 000 enemy strength claims, praises Milroy and his men, details the June siege actions, retreats, fatalities, and hardships, and notes Milroy's calm leadership and dislike of red tape. Col. Pierce leads after Milroy.
Illinois reports one eighth of church members in the war from 110 churches. Wisconsin notes four ministers as chaplains with 28 ministerial sons enlistments and Beloit College students mobilized. one in nine church members overall are in the war. Minnesota data from 43 churches shows one seventh of male members in the army including eleven church officers and seven ministerial sons.
A Civil War letter found near Corinth shared by Lieut. Bennet Davis is presented as a specimen of Southern literature. The writer, identified as Eorrors, is shared by M. W. Beate for readers of the Messenger, preserving a direct verbatim transcript.
A wartime letter from a Cross Plains reader dated September 26 1862 writes to J R Black. The writer expresses well wishes for home, asks to keep letters coming, and seeks reassurance about affection and future reunion. The tone is earnest and personal with requests for continued correspondence.
A Confederate period incident near their camp describes Forest and a Lieutenant contending for a witty beauty. The Lieutenant sought leave, was refused, and returned to confront Forest who appeared ready to draw a pistol. The Lieutenant shot Forest in the neck, ending the encounter.
A California preacher recounted Lorenzo Dow telling a colored boy named Gabriel to hide in a pine tree and blow his horn as a rehearsal for the Day of Judgment. Dow used the stunt to evoke fear and illustrate the archangel’s trumpet, then halted a boy from being punished.
Captain Buckle of the 11th Indiana recounts brutal clash at Champion Hills Mississippi. James Brown the big private fought fiercely with a clubbed rifle before being wounded, while Corporal Mathews shielded men and repelled bayonet thrusts. Reloading behind trees led to a quick ramrod wound through a rebel, leaving it lodged in a tree.
A fragmentary temperance piece likens Old Nick to a fire fed by rum money and public opinion. It describes moderating drink as fuel and portrays the temperance movement as a quiet, steady force shaping the stone and sledge of moral effort.
