Allied troops in New Guinea advance toward Mubo near Munda as American and Australian forces tighten the noose on Japanese positions. A MacArthur briefing says a decisive offensive is underway in the southwest Pacific as the drive to Munda continues.
Allied anti aircraft gunners on Krena Island used 88 percent of rounds to shoot down 12 bomber planes and a Zero in a single afternoon strike. American fighters expanded pressure around Jamaua and Mubo as Green Hill fell to Allied forces and enemy efforts at Mubo were cut off. Allied patrols clashed north of Salus Lake as operations continued in New Guinea and surrounding Solomons. Liberators and Flying Fortresses attacked enemy airfields while a light warship shelled Kiska island defenses.
Senator Reynolds of North Carolina, chair of the Military Affairs Committee, urged that the Army stop drawing on civilian workers. He opposed drafting labor and argued the Army is large enough, suggesting consignments should taper off.

Alpha Russell age 75 a miner from Middleport died this morning at Holzer Hospital where he was admitted Wednesday evening for medical treatment. He is survived by his wife Edith Winkler Russell. Funeral arrangements will be made at Middleport.
