More than 60 deaths were blamed on a two day heat wave across the East with about 12 due to drownings or lightning. The West and Midwest saw relief as storms and showers arrived, while the East suffered many prostrations and store closures.
Hay across Southeastern Ohio is plentiful says M. Hartman SE Test Farm superintendent at Carpenter, after a meeting with County Extension Agent T. H. Johnson. First cutting yielded 22 tons from six acres, second cut expected two tons per acre. Field day at the farm on August 2 will demonstrate how to raise legumes with dairying to address local dairy problems.
United States export totals for January through June 1927 outweighed imports by 240.758 million dollars, according to the Comueapee department.
A Pomeroy meeting of state and local officials including State Highway Engineer Wright McCroba and Hocking Valley Railway representatives will decide actions to clear debris from the downtown landslide. Brooklyn authorities accuse Ludwig Lee of killing Miss Sarah Brownell a boarding house keeper and her friend Mrs Alfred Bennett. Both bodies were dismembered after Brownell was slain. Lee protests his innocence as he is led to the district attorney.
Logan officials report 33 year old William Montgomery found dead in a clay mine pool east of Logan. Columbus pathologist Dr Ernest Scott concluded after microscopic lung exam that asphyxiation from drowning caused the death. The report goes to Magistrate J P Miller for coroner’s record. Prosecutor Phil Henderson was out of town.
A Marion low price filling station, sparked by a 15 cent a gallon gasoline war, was burglarized early today. Thieves forced a rear office window, knocked off the safe combination, and stole more than $700 in cash.
In July 14 staff special notes that candidates for the board of education will not appear on the August primary ballot. Names will be on a separate ticket for the November election, with petitions bearing the required signatures due 60 days before that election.
Dr C C Kirk of the University of Arkansas is named the new superintendent of the Institution for feeble-minded at Orient. Announcement made by state welfare director John E B Harper. Kirk is a Ohio Medical College graduate with 20 years in mental health services including time at Toledo State Hospital.
Nelson Smith aged 20 collapsed and died in a pool near Nelsonville after a heart attack while swimming. emergency teams arrived but could not revive him.
Nelsonville July 14 Nelson Smith 20 died after a heart attack while swimming with his brother’s family at the Patton dam pool east of Nelsonville. Relatives misread his condition as play and searched for twenty minutes before finding him under water. Artificial respiration failed. His body was taken to his brother J D Smith and then to his parents in Chillicothe. He was visiting from Athens where he was traveling as a wholesale salesman on vacation.
Jackson reports that the women of the local golf club will join with the Portsmouth, Athens, and Chillicothe clubs for a tournament at Portsmouth on Friday, July 15. Sidney police seek Harry Custenborder, a 30 year old WW veteran and prominent business man missing since Saturday.
Memphis M. Myers of Marysville has been hired to judge the full waterfowl exhibit at the State Fair in Columbus next month. He is regarded as one of the top poultry judges in the state.

A false start earlier, tow back, radio to track progress, and an escort of navy planes and marine ships set to accompany the flight. Weather cited as misty with favorable winds.
Three lives were lost yesterday along Kanawha and Elk rivers near Charleston West Virginia. Two girls drowned in the Elk near Winfield at the new Salvation Army camp while a young boy died after accidentally falling into the Elk at the foot of North Rand Street.
Troy reports farmer Finest MecGalliard holds the state oats championship with a stalk measuring five and a half feet, capturing top honors in Ohio.
A 9 year old boy named Jimmy Overmyer acted as mayor of Athens for one hour saying officers should not idle and hinting at garbage collection rules. Mayor Alex Moore allowed the brief tenure and praised Jimmy's energy. Junior town members helped run commissions and entertainment as preparations for tomorrow's picnic underway at the state Hospital grounds.
Chauncey July 14 Ori Daugherty president of the local subdistrict denies plans to resign addressing 500 union miners at Chauncey ball park. He says John L. Lewis did not ask a resignation but would if in his place. He urges joint talks with operators to reach a fair scale while criticizing small mines and urging a stop to working under the new scale. David Watkins follows as District 6 vice president.
Canton reports former detective Streitenberger planned a beating of Don R. Mellett as part of a Canton police underworld conspiracy. He testified Lengel plotted with Louis Mazer to assault Mellett, but the attack allegedly exceeded expectations.
July 14 Chauncey reports street improvements underway. Ruts and holes are being filled and crossings raised. Brick portions are removed for cinder filling before relaying. Burke Witham supervises the project across town.
Paris reports nine years after the death of Lt. Quentin Roosevelt an American World War II hero, the field where he fell near Chamery remains a grave site. Flowers cover the simple marker as visitors pay respects, with a memorial fountain nearby bearing his name and a quote from his father.

Daniel McBride, 76, was injured Wednesday after a fall down stairs at his street home. A head gash required several stitches by Dr. LeFever. McBride, a longtime coal man in Sunday Valley, once supervised Mine No. 4 near Jacksonville, developed with W. P. of Chicago who helped develop coal in the valley.
