Ohio Brines Studied by State Geologists
The state geological survey reports the first findings on Ohio brines including Athens County. Wilber Stout and associates describe wells drilled circa 1820 on the Hocking River and Sunday Creek, yielding strong brines from Big Injun sand at 5380 feet with 75 gallons producing seven pounds of salt. Central Ohio relied on these works, and salt was scarce and costly before wider exploration.
