Athens County Fair Through Generations and Growth
The Athens County Fair began in 1828 as the first in southeastern Ohio and remains the region’s premier event. S. F. Beverage, 89, treasurer of the Athens County Agricultural Society since 1898, notes yearly improvements and will attend the August 22 opening. He recalls early fairs, ticket prices, and portable amusements, stressing the fair’s enduring value in keeping rural youth on the farm.
