Airliner Crash Near Newport Kills 39 Aboard
A United Air Lines Viscount turboprop crashed in the Great Smoky Mountains near Newport Tennessee eight miles from the North Carolina line. The late Thursday disaster killed all 39 aboard and triggered FBI inquiry. The Philadelphia to Huntsville flight had stopped in Washington and was due in Knoxville minutes after the crash.
