Fugitives end spree after surrender near Tonopah Nevada
Two Oregon murder kidnapping suspects Wilbur Grey and Carl Bowles surrendered to California troopers at the California Nevada line ending a three day chase that included a Portland bank robbery the murder of Oregon Deputy Sheriff Carlton E Smith and the kidnapping of nine people. Hostages were released as the fugitives gave up with a bystander injuring a California official and a 19 month old girl among those released.

Hollywood Stunt Pilot Mantz Dies In Desert Crash
In Yuma Arizona Paul Mantz 61 a famed stunt pilot known for flying dangerous scenes in nearly 300 films died when a plane he piloted disintegrated 17 miles west during filming of Flight of the Phoenix Rose 64 survived with serious injuries.
