Logan Hocking County commissioners tentatively approved a 1972 budget totaling 1,478,203.92 with a general fund near 618,443.67 up about 90,000 from 1970. The plan includes a 12,500 interest payment on 235,000 for a new health center and long term care unit and a proposed junior fair building.
Wendell Harbert ceases the Wellston daily and the McArthur weekly after stating ongoing losses. The Wellston Sentinel, McArthur Democrat Enquirer, and related papers shut down. the Wellston Telegram remains a local weekly while McArthur is left with the McArthur Republican Tribune.

McARTHUR The driver education program at Vinton County High School gains a second car this summer. Jackson Motors donated a Plymouth for use, supplementing the car from Gill Chevrolet. Driving sessions operate from five elementary centers, with continued offerings planned for 1971-1972 and possibly summer 1972 if interest remains.
Negotiations for a new contract with Local No. 146 United Shoe Workers AFL CIO are in progress at Brooks Shoe Co with federal mediator Howard Hughes Columbus and union leaders William Martin and Jack Wallace participating. Workers remain on the old contract. David M Horner paid a $10 fine after a traffic light violation in Nelsonville Mayor's Court.
