Athens County Jail History and Shrinking Modern Standards
The long history of Athens County jail facilities shows a progression from a 1806 log jail to a 1844 brick sheriff’s residence, with later expansions and replacements. Despite repeated attempts, voters rejected a 1930 plan for a $100,000 new jail, and the aging structures faced ongoing safety and sanitary concerns.
