The region consumes 40,000 tons of coal daily to power steel production for ships, including battleships of 35,000 tons, a workload shared by over 6,700 coal miners producing a full day’s output.

Carbon Hill Factory Idled by Labor Trouble

The Robert, Inc. furniture factory at Carbon Hill near Nelsonville has been idle this week due to a stalled labor dispute. About 30 to 35 workers are affected after the plant voted mid June to decertify the United Furniture Workers of America CIO as their bargaining agent, leading District 50 of the United Mine Workers to try to organize the workforce. Owners in St. Louis refused to recognize the new union, citing NLRB regulations. The existing contract expired June 30 and no new agreement has been reported.
