Garfield is Shot at Washington Depot
President Garfield was shot at 9:28 am at the Baltimore and Potomac depot in Washington as he and Secretary Blaine entered for a train to Long Branch. The assailant, Charles J. Guiteau, fired twice, saying Arthur should become president. Garfield was wounded in the groin and transported to the White House for treatment.
