Ohio counted 22 accidental deaths in the 54 hour holiday period ending at midnight Sunday. Ten traffic deaths, ten drownings, plus a Bay Village gun discharge death and a Cincinnati doctor air crash bring the tally above Memorial Day figures. Sunday morning shows road toll rising to five and drownings at seven.
National Safety Council reports far fewer traffic deaths than the 350 pre holiday estimate with drownings and other fatal accidents pushing total past 500 for the weekend. About 45 million vehicles traveled, six states avoid any highway deaths, Texas leads state counts with 22, Illinois and Virginia 16 each, Chicago sees only one traffic fatality. New York records 19 drownings, Texas 18.
Miss Diane Tripp was elected Miss Vinton County Saturday night at the McArthur Downtown Coaches 4th of July celebration. She was chosen from 18 teens in a pageant with Bonnie Garrison crowning the new queen.

A car traveling about 100 mph ran off a highway south of Parkersburg and burst into flames. Two teenagers, Wanda Emerick 18 of Belpre and Richard A. Cooper 19 of Parkersburg, were killed. Two other teens in the vehicle were injured, not seriously.
Clyde J. Bartlett is appointed pastor of Middleport Nazarene Church succeeding Robert Palmer. The change is announced by Dr. Harvey S. Galloway district superintendent for central Ohio and becomes effective August 1.

The Ohio Highway Patrol ceased the manhunt for Richard Eugene Nolan and George Kundracik after tips pointed toward Circleville. The two, both serving manslaughter sentences, allegedly paid a farmer five dollars to drive them to Circleville after fleeing the Hocking Honor Camp in a prison wagon. Nolan, from Butler County, had about a year at the camp, while Kundracik, from Cuyahoga County, was transferred there in 1955.
A light plane carrying three New York men crashed half a mile south of Yellow Springs killing all three aboard and injuring a fourth. Local authorities investigated the crash site as dawn broke.
George Albert Rand, 34, wanted in the shooting and burning murder of Melvin E. Payne, 35, evaded Cleveland police by 15 minutes last Thursday in Columbus. Rand is charged with first degree homicide and was identified as a bus passenger who left Cleveland at 11 p.m. FBI agents joined local police in the search, and authorities say a motive has been established with strong circumstantial evidence pointing to Rand.
A barrel tagged danger radioactive waste AEC washed up on the Port Orford Oregon beach. Rear Adm. Frank T. Watkins said it may be an empty container. Geiger counters detected radioactivity but the Navy attributes it to sun reflections. investigation continues.
Ohio lawmakers prepare to vote on a bipartisan campaign finance bill with penalties up to 1000 dollars. The measure requires candidates to appoint a campaign manager registered with state election authorities and to funnel contributions through that manager.

US Air Force Europe says a combined air-ground search team will hunt the Libyan desert area of a World War II bomber crash for nine missing American fliers from a B24 Liberator. The plane vanished on a 1943 Naples raid return. markers were found extending 18 to 21 miles from the crash site.
