A midwestern disaster report notes an excursion steamer blast on the Illinois River dragging hundreds into the water. Rescue units rush to scene as survivors recount chaotic moments and authorities investigate causes.
Nearly 100 believed dead after the excursion steamer Columbia sank in the Illinois river between Peoria and Pekin. Of about 563 on board, 33 bodies recovered by daylight and many more feared trapped below decks as the boat listed and sank in a dense fog. Coroner Clary cautioned that death toll could reach 100.
Harry Halder, famed Eastland diver, sails toward the Columbia wreck with his apparatus to recover more bodies. He is joined by Alex Dalhetram as Captain John Anderson of the Coast Guard and nine crewmen proceed from Chicago to Peoria to aid in recovery efforts.
Treasury documents to the Senate show excess profits up to 2183 percent by some firms in 1918 as part of Borah Resolution data. A food dealer is cited for the 2183 percent example.
Young men from Athens and Ohio University enrolled in the Naval Reserve have received their call. Some report to the Great Lakes Training Station today others on Monday. Affected are 38 agricultural deferrals including Raymond Foreman and many others across Athens County and nearby towns.
American forces battled in two air engagements north of Belleau Wood on the Marne front. Four American and six German planes contested the skies. three German aircraft were shot down. Two American airmen were missing after the morning fights.
Ranswell Ward, 45, died at the Athens State hospital yesterday where he had been a patient for some time. Undertaker Baughman shipped the body to Marietta this evening.
Washington reports six sailors remain missing after the torpedoing of the Covington, formerly the German liner Cincinnati, in the war zone Monday night. Naval vessels search for the men as the ship towed toward a French port proved futile. None seriously injured, others taken to safety in France.
