Drunken escapade leads to fine and workhouse sentence
Caleb Johnson of Alexander township came to Athens on the Fourth and celebrated by getting gloriously drunk. He damaged Will Bowers buggy on Main street and injured Supt. Dent’s infirmary vehicle, then was arrested by Marshall Dean. Mayor Wilson fined him ten dollars and costs and ordered fifty days in the Zanesville workhouse, but the sentence was remitted after payment of fourteen dollars and seventy five cents. He is praised as a hard worker when sober and urged to curb drinking.
