Drunken escapade leads to fine and workhouse sentence

Caleb Johnson of Alexander township came to Athens on the Fourth and celebrated by getting gloriously drunk. He damaged Will Bowers buggy on Main street and injured Supt. Dent’s infirmary vehicle, then was arrested by Marshall Dean. Mayor Wilson fined him ten dollars and costs and ordered fifty days in the Zanesville workhouse, but the sentence was remitted after payment of fourteen dollars and seventy five cents. He is praised as a hard worker when sober and urged to curb drinking.

Distinguished Athenians visit Chillicothe to observe horse racing

Hon. C. H. Grosvenor Major L. M. Jewett and Capt. 5 Allen of Athens visited Chillicothe on Thursday to study horse racing. Captain Allen bet on Starplex and, though excited in early heats, left early after learning the sport. He faced an entent with the Athens Board of th that could not be ignored.

Cruelty Allegation Against Athens Hospital Inquest

The Portsmouth Tribune reports allegations of cruelty at Athens State Hospital toward Mrs. Jennie Chambers admitted April 23, 1895. A sister visiting found her in a bare room on a straw tick, bruised and starving. Hospital officials dispute the claims, citing care and nutrition and noting prior letters describe her deteriorating condition and self-inflicted injuries. A separate note covers a local farewell reception for Mr. F. W. Bush in Athens hosted by friends.

Athens Board of Health Urges Sanitary Action in Town

Athens moves to improve sanitation as property owners are warned to clean premises. County Engineer Krug of Hamilton County submitted a report ranking bricks for street use. Athens block, Wassel block, Roseville block, Harris payer and Harris and Halwood block led the list, with the report adopted. Athens thanks Hamilton County officials for recognizing its brick quality.
