Ohio Medicaid plan would charge enrollees to save in health accounts
About 1 million low income Ohio residents could face a new monthly cost for Medicaid or lose coverage under a Republican budget provision. Governor Kasich's administration seeks a federal waiver to require adults on Medicaid to contribute 2 percent of family income or $99 yearly into a health savings account, with pregnant women exempt. Beneficiaries failing to contribute could be dropped from the program. The plan aims to curb costs in Ohio's $23 billion state federal health program, while critics warn it blocks access to care for the poor. The waiver process will unfold in coming months, with federal approval prospects uncertain. The savings account approach replaces a prior plan to charge about $20 monthly premiums for non disabled adults earning above 100 percent of poverty.
