President Rhee urged U S backing for a united Korea and vowed to continue fighting against communism. He rejected halting talks and pressed for a guaranteed unification within 90 days, while U S envoy Robertson remained open to further discussions.
Ralph T. Templin a 55 year old sociology professor and former missionary at Central State College Wilberforce Ohio ends a 12 day fast in protest of the Rosenberg execution. He drank fruit juice last night saying he had not eaten since June 20 and performed the fast in sorrow and repentance for the sin of his country. He skipped his mother's funeral in Oklahoma City noting she would not have wanted him to break the fast.
Caldwell County launches gamma globulin inoculations this weekend as part of polio fight. More than 10,000 children to be treated amid 75 reported cases since mid April and one death a 12 year old girl.
South Korean troops retreated from Lookout Mountain after a dawn to afternoon fight with Chinese forces. Officers said several corpses were found wired together, possibly a pact to die fighting or to prevent retreat. The three prong attack had driven a Chinese battalion from three positions on the ridge amid a weeklong see-saw clash on the East Central Front.
Firefighters fought for four hours in Willard as volunteers from eight towns pumped water from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reservoir. The blaze started at C. W. CLARKSBURG W Va James F Weaver a 45 year old glassworker was electrocuted last night while attempting to restore his television antenna blown down during a storm. City emergency workers reported he climbed a tree in his yard where the antenna crossed a 2200 volt wire. A shock knocked him from the tree but he continued climbing.
