Chicago July 1. Democratic leaders from Roosevelt and anti-Roosevelt camps crowd venues away from the famous Smoke-filled Room. Notables like Frank Hague James A. Farley Huey Long and former governors Byrd Cox move between conferences to influence delegates as convention hallways buzz with private talks.
Eight people died when a freight train collided with a passenger car of the Cincinnati and Lake Erie Railway near Trenton Ohio. Roy Bowman of Miamisburg died at Middletown Hospital from spinal injuries. E G Lewis of Hamilton remained in critical condition. Traction line officials blamed Joseph Brosey, passenger train operator, who was killed in the crash.
Springfield Ohio July 1 Three persons suspected of the slaying and wounding of two local policemen were held today by Indianapolis police Patrolman Charles Holt age 36 died from wounds after he and Patrolman William McCutcheon tried to question two men in an alleged stolen auto table.
A water well is being drilled in front of Bennett Creamery on East State Street. Drillers reported 50 feet depth with plans to reach at least 100 feet before a water vein is found. If a cold vein appears, refrigeration efficiency should improve. the well will be cased with an automatic pump. Stedman Packing and Athens Ice & Storage already operate private wells.
At the Democratic National Convention on July 1 1932 intense floor activity centered on the third ballot. Mississippi backing Newton Baker pressed for Roosevelt unity while Texas delegates urged to hold Roosevelt lines and Governor Byrd of Virginia was urged to be patriotic. Garner supporters in Texas gained 11 Oklahoma votes on the third ballot as Franklin D Roosevelt's two sons and daughter watched anxiously.
Deputies transported Lou Bay and Wilfred Hawkins to the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus after their guilty pleas. Bay admitted breaking and entering in a Morristown burglary. Hawkins confessed failure to provide for dependents and faces related charges. Authorities planned further transport for Charles Lamberson to Athens for an attempted bank robbery case.
Ohio State University will absorb the federal amusement tax on admissions to its three key home football games next fall. No extra charge for tickets against Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan in Ohio Stadium. Regular 10 percent tax added to tickets for games with Ohio Wesleyan and Indiana.
McArthur July 1 The Odd Fellows Lodge of Hamden won a $5400 verdict from Ohio Fuel Gas Co. The lodge blamed leaky pipes for a gas explosion that destroyed its headquarters several months earlier.
At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago Franklin D. Roosevelt declared “Everything looks all right” after the third presidential ballot. Missouri delegates questioned delays in announcing votes while Walsh explained changes in tabulation.
Columbus Ohio July 1 Governor George White may be nominated for president or vice president by the Democratic National Convention. If so Ohio would hold a miniature nominating convention to fill his governor seat and the vacancy would be filled by the Democratic State Executive Committee not the State Central Committee. Theodore H Tangeman likely as governor nominee.
A Chicago dispatch mocks Democratic conventions with playful jargon about getting wet and leaving clothes on the bank. The writer ridicules speaker Smith as the convention’s sensation while questioning leaders’ decisions and preacher reactions.
Athens Fire Chief Edward Laughlin reports the fire department had zero calls in the past 30 days forming a no fire June record similar to last year. May had four calls. strict fireworks enforcement and careful residents reduce blazes often caused by negligence.
Massachusetts Governor Joseph B. Ely urges the Democratic delegates to nominate Alfred E. Smith as a modern Andrew Jackson. Detroit July 1 Wayne County grand jury attributed the Rouge plant riot of March 7 to Communist agitators. Four men were killed and 20 injured. Prosecutor Harry B Toy urged continued investigation of Communist leaders to curb their criminal aims.
In Wellston on July 11, two thousand fishermen gathered on the bridge and banks of Lake Alma to fish after a midnight lift of the fishing ban. The eighty acre lake has been stocked with more than 30 000 fish since state parks took over the area.
Cincinnati July 1 Ohio Association of Real Estate Boards votes in favor of the county home rule constitutional amendment its supporters argue consolidation will lower taxes for property owners petitions to submit the amendment to voters next November to spur a building boom executives like George D. Robertson of Los Angeles predict a major industry upswing with heightened employment and housing demand driving new innovations in construction and living standards.
Chicago report explains Ohio delegates stayed loyal to Governor George White through the first three ballots at the Democratic convention. Indiana showed few Baker votes while Pennsylvania briefly backed the Cleveland attorney.
