In Belfast the IRA detonated two gelignite bombs destroying a Home Stores window cleaners van and an electrical shop in a busy arcade injuring ten. The deaths in Londonderry bring Catholic-Protestant violence totals to 232 since 1969 with fifty nine deaths this year.
New York Mayor John V. Lindsay gains strong youth support to finish second in Arizona Democratic delegate selection. Ed Muskie leads with 189 delegates, Lindsay 118, McGovern 102, in a 500-member contest to pick 25 Arizona delegates for the national convention in Miami Beach. Lindsay emphasizes an underdog surge and declares Arizona likes a fighter.
New theories emerge about the origin of the Howard Hughes autobiography and the disposal of royalties as Clifford Irving faces a Manhattan grand jury. Irving’s wife Edith deposited 650000 in Swiss banks, later redeposited, with disputed amounts and possible computer printout influence.
Time speculates Irving may have obtained Hughes printout material. Rumors persist of an angry former Hughes employee delivering files. A man claiming to be Hughes denounces the autobiography as a hoax. Richard Hannah notes that Hughes data was computerized under Gray and Pettit with no confidential memos, and he says there isn’t enough material for Irving’s text.
Gen. Westmoreland predicts a substantial North Vietnamese push just below the DMZ and in the central highlands of South Vietnam. He believes after a week in the war zone that South Vietnamese forces can withstand any threat with only temporary enemy gains.
SAIGON AP. U S B52 bombers pressed a heavy raid along a 200 mile western Vietnam corridor from the DMZ to the central highlands dropping over 500 tons on North Vietnamese troop and supply sites. Westmoreland said Hanoi may launch a multi phase offensive next month and cautioned that staying power is limited while allies gain strength.
The Pentagon reports Cuba received two OS A class missile firing patrol boats, each with four Styx missiles and a 15 mile range, arriving after Cuban gunboat attacks on Panamanian freighters. The vessels, 200 tons, exceed older Komar boats in range and armament, signaling a push to strengthen Cuba’s armed forces amid ongoing Soviet deliveries including MIG21s. A Russian frigate and diesel submarine also left Cuba after three months of antisubmarine exercises.
Charlotte case sees garbage collectors blamed for missing laundry. City attorney Henry Underhill recommends denying Isabell McGee's $175.11 claim for clothes left on a trash container and hauled away while she briefly left them unattended.
Bayard Austin 61, executive director of the A. Philip Randolph Institute of New York, was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon after being picked up near Times Square while walking with a sword cane. He was freed in his own recognizance for a hearing today. Police described the item as a straight wooden cane concealing a 16 inch blade.
Publisher Ralph Ginzburg publicly appeals to the U S Supreme Court to block a three year prison term set to begin February 17 for an obscenity conviction. He was previously convicted for distributing promotional material for Eros, his sex quarterly, via the mails. In a full page Times ad he urged the court to reconsider and headlined Dont send me to prison.
