Few Mental Cases Develop In Viet Combat Fatigue At Low Rate
A Walter Reed Army Institute of Research team notes remarkably few mental breakdowns among U.S. and South Vietnamese troops in Vietnam. During the first six months of 1966, with 164000 U.S. troops, 757 were hospitalized for neuropsychiatric disorders, about 6 percent for combat fatigue. The Vietnamese army reported 324 cases. researchers say only the severely ill were hospitalized, with just under one percent combat fatigue. An Army psychiatrist in the 1st Infantry Division said civilian mental health in the U.S. is worse than among soldiers overseas. The study also found 39 percent of American neuropsychiatric patients had character and behavior disorders, often seeking to end their tour or be discharged.
