Ohio University will honor 215 graduates at mid year commencement with Frances B. Bolton congresswoman from Ohio's 22nd District delivering the main address on Education for Today's World. President John C. Baker will preside at 2 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
The Senate Appropriations Committee votes on a defense money bill likely to pass as is the House version totaling 1.41 billion dollars. It includes 910 million for Air Force missiles and warning systems, 350 million for Navy ship construction including three Polaris capable submarines, 40 million to Army missile programs, and 10 million for a new Advanced Research Projects Agency.
James Myers aged 22 and Walter Jankowski 27, both of Buffalo New York, were given prison terms for the December 19 shooting of Ohio highway patrolman Augustine P Giuffre 39. Myers received 3 to 55 years at Mansfield Reformatory and Jankowski 2 to 40 years at Ohio Penitentiary. They pleaded guilty to shooting with intent to kill two counts of burglary and two auto theft charges. Prosecution said retainers filed against them in New York Lafayette and Erie counties and Riverside County California. They are also wanted for parole violations in New York.
The Ohio Department of Highways awarded a contract to John Hill Contracting Co of Lexington to build the first section of the Newark Expressway. A Newark group opposed the project, prompting a delay to ensure the full expressway would be completed in three sections.
Charles Starkweather, 19, admitted to 11 slayings as he rides with peace officers from Douglas, Wyoming to Lincoln Nebraska. Authorities say ten killings occurred in the Lincoln area while snow slows the convoy on U S highways. Starkweather claims his girlfriend Caril Fugate had no involvement. He seeks to justify his crime as a lifelong wish to be an outlaw.
Senate investigators open hearings on power struggles within Chicago locals 150 and 399 of the International Union of Operating Engineers led by William E. Maloney. Chief counsel Kennedy says probe may link the 1933 Ziegler murder to these fights and Maloney's control and illGained funds totaling 353,650 dollars from 1950 to 1956.
About 600 teachers and administrators attended three days of sessions at the Ohio Education Association convention in Columbus. Keynote Dr. Arthur F. Corey urged universal improvement in teaching quality across all subjects as the nation seeks a broad education program in response to Sputnik. The event marked the third recent explosion at the facility but production continued. E E Nelson resident manager put damages at 75000 dollars and an investigation was started to determine the cause.
A muddy Ohio road caused a car driven by Betty Person to skid and hit a tree killing three children, Tom 3 Tim 3 and 8 month Ted. Surviving are Addison and Betty, Tom and Tim’s parents, and several relatives. Funeral services set for Sunday at Murray City Methodist Church.
Richard Boehler, 17, says he kicked Minnie Jean Brown, 16, near the Central High School campus after classes. He reports anonymous callers threatened his family with death. prosecutor declined arrest warrant, investigation to continue.
POINT PLEASANT Thirty minutes after a call about a car stolen from in front of a tavern near West Columbia police recovered the auto. The driver, Marvin Bennett Jr. 19 of Le Tart, waived to the grand jury and was arraigned before Justice A M Goodwin. Bennett posted a $1500 bond to answer an indictment when the May term of the grand jury convenes.
Gov. C. William O'Neill remained in a more normal condition late Thursday as he continued his recovery from a mild heart attack suffered last week in Columbus Ohio.

General Motors president Curtice urged Congress to consider a broad tax reduction to boost a lagging economy. Sen. Kefauver opposed an all-encompassing cut, saying he could not support it at this time. Curtice testified that both new and used car sales were slow and that the public remained cautious in purchases. He left the final amount to Congress, arguing tax cuts would restore confidence and spur production.
