Captain William J. Rannells died in Washington D C from pneumonia at fifty two. A Vin ton County native with Athens ties he served two Ohio state senate terms and was Solicitor General under Judge Taft. He fought for the Union, endured captures and wounds at Gettysburg Bull Run and Gainesville, escaped confinement, and became known for daring Florida campaigns. He later held Loyal Legion and Grand Army honors and left behind relatives in Athens. An early morning fire destroyed the Hungey saloon property near the B O Southwestern depot with losses around 2000 and insurance. Parlor Car Wyandot on C H V T to Columbus offers 25 cent seats.
Deputy Marshal A B Wood of West Indianapolis recounts twenty years of nervous illness heart disease and gastric catarrh ending in near prostration before using Dr Greene's Ner vara blood and nerve remedy. It covers Senator Teller's rebuttal of the Hawaii West amendment, party dynamics over sugar tariff repeal, new Senator Pritchard from North Carolina, and secretary Carlisle’s use of financial riders on appropriation bills.
Dr Josiah Hartzell of Canton warned at a Columbus meeting that contaminated wells spread typhoid, citing cases and a New York well at 1000 feet. He urged filtration and boiling or distillation, cautioning against drinking water from wells near cesspools or barns and advising chemist opinions when in doubt.
