A period anti secession song recounts 1861 events with heavy Civil War imagery. It praises the Union Wagon, contrasts Abraham Lincoln with secession, and lauds Emancipation as a pivotal force while invoking patriotic refrain.
Col Stanley recounts the 18th O. V. I. and allied regiments' heavy fighting at Stone River near Murfreesboro January 1863. He praises officers and men, notes captures, captures of enemy batteries, and extensive casualties. He laments robberies of surgeons and soldiers, and praises Dr. Johnson and Dr. Mills for care.
A long casualty list from the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry details officers and men wounded killed missing or prisoner in action near Murfreesboro Tennessee. Names ranks units and outcomes include Lieut. Col. Given Captains Fenton Welch Johnson M. Welch and major others severely wounded or killed with several prisoners noted and missing.
From the 116th Regiment Ohio Volunteers details of prisoner losses and combat around Moorefield on the 3rd, with Athens county men captured. The narrative covers Rebel forces under Gen Jones, artillery exchanges, a Tennesee river pursuit, and a key action at Parker's Cross Roads where the Buckeye brigade charged and routed the enemy before a flag exchange halted further fighting. Reports also note further captures from Monroe county and the brigade movement toward Trenton and Clarksburg.
In a letter dated January 11, 1863 from Oxford Mississippi the writer describes a long march back to Corinth after a disrupted supply line. He notes the Ohio Brigade including the 68th 43rd 11th and 27th Regiments and railroad raids that cut communications between Jackson Tennessee and Columbus.
An anecdote from Fair Oaks recalls a Lancaster company captain rallying men to march between opposing lines and shoot the Confederate officer in command. The risky mission succeeds as the officer falls and retreat follows amid heavy fire and smoke.
