President Nixon told Congress unemployment is the great enemy and pledged to defeat joblessness and inflation. The year 1972 should see real output rising about 9 percent with a 6 percent 1971 jobless rate cut, as price controls remain until stability is secured.
A stocky gunman hijacked a Mohawk Airlines jet from Albany to New York with a water cannon “bomb” and $200000 ransom. After landing the hijacker forced stewardess Eileen McAllister into a car. an FBI agent shot and killed Heinrich von George, 45, when he opened fire.
The United States told the Vietnamese Communists it will not finish withdrawing forces from South Vietnam until a final peace agreement is signed. Ambassador Porter said withdrawals could start on agreement in principle but finish only after full agreement on all aspects. The eight point Nixon plan calls for six month U.S. troop withdrawal after peace, prisoner release, and a coalition South Vietnamese election under international supervision.
In Columbus Ohio three inmates escaped from the Ohio Penitentiary through the wall system. James Lewis was captured in Grandview after the others fled. The men identified are Gilbert Mannis Donald Ferdinand and James Lewis all serving multi year terms for murder assault robbery and bank robbery. The warden said they worked on a water pipe break and escaped via ventilating louvers a roof and a wall using a three strand rope.
Daniel Berrigan, 51, is released on parole after serving 17 months of a three year sentence for destroying draft records at Catonsville Maryland in 1968. The parole board cited health information as part of the second review.
Decatur reporter notes James R. Reynolds 34 of Argenta arrested in Illinois on a federal warrant for bank robbery tied to the May 18 1971 Vinton Banking Co holdup in Vinton Ohio. Warrant issued January 20 by U S District Court in Columbus Ohio.
Gov. John J. Gilligan urged Big Ten action after a brawl between Minnesota and Ohio State players in Minneapolis. He condemned the melee as disgraceful and said disciplined steps by Wayne Duke are needed or intercollegiate sports risk losing Ohio State support. Luke Witte may miss Michigan game with injury.
Author Clifford Irving claims he personally handed Howard Hughes a 275000 check for part of the autobiography. Hughes denies meeting Irving or receiving 650000, calling the work a fake. Ackerman says Irving will publish a genuine, successful book.
