Meigs County marks sesquicentennial with quiet observance

Meigs County observed its 150th anniversary this week with little fanfare. Historical notes recount how the county formed from Washington County land, the shifting county seats to Middleport then Pomeroy, and the early court records including a liquor license fine and a Revolutionary War pension claim.

Changes over 150 years shape Meigs County history

Meigs County marks 130 years of existence with a look back at its settlement by New Englanders, river trade on the Ohio, and a once thriving coal gas salt and lumber economy. Population rose to 12,000 by 1880, then declined due to transportation shifts and resource changes as roads, water systems, and schools modernized. The 1028 Pomeroy-Mason Bridge linked Ohio and West Virginia, fueling agriculture and power. Today miners, gas workers, and locals strive to advance Meigs County amid debates over success or failure.
