Processing Plant Installed At Albany Stone Quarries

Diamond Stone Quarries, Inc., installs a new processing system west of Albany on Route 50 to produce cleaner impurity-free limestone. Quarry superintendent Roger Van Dyke notes potential extra workers at No. 2 quarry and cites current employment around 20 men with payroll near 80 000 to 85 000 dollars annually. Private haulers move 700 000 to 800 000 tons daily to southeastern Ohio jobs. The system includes screening to remove impurities, with shale and other materials reduced. Most limestone is used as base for concrete and tar. Trucks delivered 35 000 tons to Route 33 project north of Chauncey for berm material. 100 000 tons slated for Route 33 north from Pomeroy. Quarries supply Athens, Hocking, Meigs counties and interstate road projects at Marietta and Parkersburg. Quarries operate year round, closing only in extreme cold or mud. No. 1 vein mined since 1920s, 100-acre tract, marine limestone vein studied by OU and Marietta College. A thicker vein exists at 100 feet depth but mining costs are prohibitive. surface exposure in central Ohio allows easy strip mining near Columbus. Diamond company officials: W. E. Engle, president, McArthur. Wayne F. Welch, Albany, secretary-treasurer.
