SAN FRANCISCO. Warden James A Johnston sent guards to isolate about 100 inmates at Alcatraz in solitary cells to quell a strike that began in the laundry where Al Capone works. The warden vowed the revolt would be liquidated and refused to name strike participants.
Three Ohio members of Congress asked Works Progress Administration head Hopkins for funds to build armories, but canceled a planned visit after Hopkins discouraged the project. He said most of the proposed 2 million dollar construction fund would go to materials rather than later needs.
Congress approved immediate payment of veterans bonuses totaling 2.49 billion dollars with 346 to 0 House vote, sending the measure to the White House. The plan gives 3.5 million World War II veterans $50 bonds or cash, bearing 3 percent interest, beginning June 15, 19 87.
