He was trying to slip out a kitchen door to dodge the summons. Cpl. H. Lay was notified by telegram and Kierns was jailed in Athens County awaiting word from the base commander.
Fifteen persons including Athens residents and QO U. students appeared before Mayor Robert Wood on charges of failure to display tail lights while parked. They were dismissed upon promising not to violate the law again. A school bus was struck at an unguarded crossing in Berea, causing the driver to die. Several young students were aboard. one girl narrowly survived. Authorities lack an explanation for the collision.
Cleveland Jan 12 UP One hundred twelve persons killed and 106 seriously injured in the eight major grade crossing accidents in Ohio since 1922, a United Press survey shows. The Bellevue interurban crash of January 22, 1929, tops the list with 19 dead and 16 injured.
A Berea school bus with 22 pupils was struck by a fast express train at a crossing. Nine children and the driver died, one child survived with minor injuries, and officials opened an inquest. The Ford bus was almost destroyed and identification was by teachers and staff.
The Berea crash report lists the dead: Jacob Walter 1 Juanita Walter 11 Rita Zielenski 8 Vincent Zielenski 6 Dorothy Zielenski 6 Vernon Davidson 7 William Davidson 14 Evelyn Kallenbach 7 William Pastorek 10 John Taylor 34 driver of the bus. Injured child Mary Davidson 4% appears in the list.
Coroner Pearse says the driver appeared at fault in the Buffalo to Chicago train collision with a bus. The train, almost all mail cars except one coach, was en route when struck center on the tracks. Mary Davidson, 12, the only survivor, was hospitalized as investigators review road conditions and crew reports.
Kent Pope, a Cleveland salesman, described the Berea crossing disaster aboard a train. He witnessed mangled bodies along the right of way and witnesses, including a survivor, Mary Davidson. Motorists recovered the dead as the bus was demolished and debris scattered.

The Kansas City Journal reports the Federal Parole Board acted favorably on Dr. Frederick A. Cook a former Arctic explorer serving four years at Leavenworth for misusing the mails. The board recommended to Attorney General Mitchell that Cook be paroled after a Board review by Warden Thomas E. White A H McCormick and Dr A Bennett. They concurred in urging release at the earliest possible date.
The Ohio Bell Telephone Company plans underground conduit work from Columbus through the Hocking Valley. District manager W Sc Lyons told a Chamber of Commerce luncheon the line from Canal Winchester to Lancaster will be completed this year and then extended further south in the valley.
Ralph Bryson known as Ghouster was arrested this morning on a noon support charge. Deputy Sheriff Fred Heek led the arrest and Bryson was taken to Columbus in custody of local officers.
Veteran engineer John A Hand faced the Berea crash aftermath as Train No. 6, traveling 45 miles per hour, struck a bus and killed many children. He returned to Union Station, shaken, stating he did not see the bus approach and that he must report the catastrophe.
Edward Clayton of Akron was severely injured when a Pennsylvania flyer train struck his Edinburg school bus near the crossing. He was placed aboard a train to Alliance for treatment after the collision occurred a short distance from the crossing.
State Architect TL Ralph Ridley announced a February start for a $517,000 construction program. Planned items include $131,000 for a cottage at Massillon State Hospital, $181,000 for a kitchen and cattle building at the State Cleveland facility, $125,000 at State Hospital, Galipolia, and $110,000 for a sheep exhibit building at the Ohio Fair Grounds.
