Seven thousand more American soldiers arrived in South Viet Nam to strengthen Saigon defenses and reinforce the Marine beachhead on the central coast. Viet Cong forces avoided major action before the upcoming lunar New Year, but guerrilla bands continued harassment.
U S officials had no report on the fate of Douglas Ramsey 28 of Boulder City Nevada assistant representative of the U S aid mission in Hau Nghia Province. He was seized by guerrillas while driving in a jeep with his Vietnamese chauffeur near Trung Lap village headquarters of the U S Australian drive against the Viet Cong Iron Triangle.
Nigeria's new military ruler Major General Aguiyi Ironsi promises to end disorder, impose martial law if needed, form a constitutional committee, and schedule elections after a new constitution. He spoke at a guarded Lagos briefing following a failed coup and three months of western regional rioting that left over 100 dead.
Miami reports 160 refugees arriving to push the Dec 1 airlift total beyond five thousand. The tally shows 1257 men 2265 women and 1562 children. Mackey Airlines operates twice daily from Varadero Beach under a U S government paid program. Separately six Cuban migrants reach Key Sal then advance to the United States via Coast Guard rescue.
At Havana conference of Asian, African, and Latin American revolutionaries, Wu Hsueh tsien pressed for broader war against U S imperialism and accused the Soviet bloc of restraint. The Federal Reserve reports that industrial output last month rose two points above November, reaching 148.3 percent of the 1957-59 base. This marks a new record level for manufacturing activity.
Atty. Gen. Nicholas Katzenbach defends the 1965 Voting Rights Act as Southern states challenge its constitutionality. The act abolished literacy tests in seven states and boosted Black registration, while Georgia and others present their arguments. Katzenbach will have two hours to address the court after Georgia's half hour.
A Hocking County man, Charles Amerine 30 of Logan, appeared Monday charged only with theft of about $400 from a mail sack Jan. 13. He drove a private mail contractor truck and was nabbed at a stakeout in Logan. Earlier reports tied him to a $36,000 missing shipment to a Cincinnati bank.
The Johnson administration plans to add 113000 fighting troops to strengthen Army and Marine ground forces in Vietnam. McNamara said Congress will be asked for 12.346 billion in new Viet Nam funding plus 415 million for economic purposes, lifting defense outlays to 58.3 billion next fiscal year. The last time manpower topped three million was June 1954 with 3,302,104.
