President Eisenhower, at his first news conference in 22 months, said he would prefer a deficit to a tax increase to handle the proposed federal budget. He noted advisers expect an upturn from the recession as he discussed the 73.9 billion dollar budget and current deficit prospects.
The Army tested its Redstone missile at Cape Canaveral with night launches and photographic tracking along Atlantic stations. The 69 foot long Redstone, first stage of Jupiter C, aims to orbit an Earth satellite within a month.
The Redstone missile arc showed a bright white trail and a brief flaming tail as it climbed southeast. Officials reported a normal flight with no distance or target disclosed. The vehicle, produced by Chrysler in Detroit with an Rocketdyne engine, exceeded its designed range, while a Jupiter C stage carried it to 3500 miles over the Atlantic.

Sigourney Iowa Myron Richard Hammes one day old will be spoiled by his father after the family tragedy of October 25 1956 when eight of their children died in a collision between a car driven by Mrs Hammes and a Rock Island Railroad freight train. The infant weighs sixteen pounds and were told to be fine. The father stood at the hospital nursery window and the nurse teased him about overindulgence. He replied with a restrained smile saying their life has been dull for a year.
Lt. Gen. Arthur Gilbert Trudeau was chosen to replace Lt. Gen. James Gavin as the Army's research and development chief. He will assume the post on April 1 after Gavin retires. Trudeau, 55, aims to infuse a vigorous attitude into the U.S. missile and weapons program and has a background in civil engineering and Army intelligence work.
The Navy announced that two lightweight torpedoes the Mark 32 and Mark 43 have been delivered to the fleet. They are the first in a new series designed to home in on targets by following sounds as part of a broader antisubmarine warfare push.
