Hybrid Corn Advantage in Southern U.S. Fields
Southern Union corn growers have been slow to adopt hybrid seed due to cost and concerns about show value. In 1944 Indiana and Kentucky hybrids yielded about ten bushels more per acre than best open-pollinated whites, with U.S. 379 and U.S. 239 performing strongest. Hybrid seed promises higher output of grain, beef, and milk per farm acre despite seed price and show-ability concerns.

Cattle Grub Control By January March Treatments
Ohio entomologist T. H. Parks notes cattle losses from tile grub in meat and hides can be prevented with January February and March treatments. Grubs live under the hide on the backs, perforate the hide to pupate, then become adult flies. Effective methods include rotenone in soapy water for sheltered cattle or rotenone and sulfur dust for cattle outdoors. Apply solution with a stiff brush or dust by shaking from a jar with holes. One pound of ground cube root with 4-5 percent rotenone treats 12 cattle once. two to three treatments may be needed to kill all grubs. Booklets titled Cattle Grubs and Their Control are available from the county extension office at Athens Post Office.
