VICA Plans School Skating Party At Dow Mink
The Athens High School VICA chapter will sponsor a skating party at Dow's Mink near Nelsonville Friday night from 7:30 to 10:30 open to the public. Admission 50 cents and skates rental. Proceeds fund the annual employers banquet. A 35-year-old Athens woman Leona M Young jailed in lieu of 300 bond after pleading no contest to driving while intoxicated. Hearing set for 9 a.m. January 16.

Peace Corps assigns couple to Kenya teaching posts
A Athens couple, Kerry and Mrs. Kerry Ahearn, both Stanford graduates, are among 140 Peace Corps volunteers assigned to Kenya. They will teach academic subjects in public schools after 12 weeks of training at Teachers College, Columbia University, covering education methods, Kenyan history, culture and Swahili.

Dalton warns gas stations will enforce state and city fire laws. Attendants may ask customers to extinguish cigarettes and not to fuel into glass or plastic containers. No fueling with engines running, no smoking on fueling areas, and no fueling into portable containers unless compliant metal construction with secure cap and pour spout. Richland Volunteers Were Busiest In 1968
The Richland Area Volunteer Fire Department logged a record 4 percent of alarms in 1968 with damages across four townships totaling about 87 500. Chief Joe Jagers noted runs topped 1967, with the three largest fires in Canaan Township home 10 000 Athens Township home 9 000 and a General Telephone Co truck in Lodi Township 10 000. Loss estimates by township ran 20210 in Athens Two 27700 in Lodi 99250 in Canaan and an Alexander figure. Alarms included 16 grass fires 18 houses 5 barns 4 motor vehicles 4 electrical 2 mobile homes 2 trees 2 outbuildings and 1 false alarm. The department operates three pumper tankers and a four wheel drive grass fire truck from headquarters on Richland Avenue at Mulligan Road and Hooper Streets, with 20 volunteers and an average of 1 man per fire. Operations are funded by contracts with townships via fire levies.
