Counterfeit Bills Turn Up In Athens
Athens police hold five blurred counterfeit twenty dollar bills found locally for U S Treasury agents. Nine counterfeit notes have circulated since Tuesday at four Athens businesses and Ohio University Baker Center. One passer was a 13 year old and a Pipe Dreams worker spotted the fake money. Authorities seek a former Ohio University student linked to the case, who offered restitution via attorney. The fakes are linked to a Cleveland ring but not connected to it. Athens notes carry serial G 10018970 A and are smaller with blurred features, while suspected fifty dollar fakes — series 1950D with A in the corner — are also sought. Treasury agents trace origin to Middletown area. Local passer unknowingly received the notes.
