President Truman proposed a $39.669 billion peacetime budget for the 1949 fiscal year, citing international and domestic needs. Two members of the Galvin Brothers Corp. of Ohio, W. J. Galvin and his son Wayne W. Galvin, announced they purchased The Winter Haven Daily Chief and The Winter Haven Sunday News in Winter Haven Florida. The papers will be combined into a single operation.

The Army transport Joseph V. Connolly caught fire and was abandoned by its 43 crew 900 miles east of New York. The S S Morrison R Waite and other ships aided as the Connolly, 422 feet, carried 5000 empty caskets for war dead from Europe. No injuries were reported among the crew.
Fire destroyed the Moose Lodge building in Findlay Ohio for a second time in three years. The two story brick structure housed the lodge on the second floor and four shops on the ground floor a state liquor store wallpaper shop bicycle shop and an electrical store. Patrolman Errald Miller found the blaze at 345 am and the fire department fought the fire to prevent spread with only smoke entering the Red Cross headquarters nearby. The hall had been rebuilt after a March 30 1945 fire with $30000 in damage previous.
William Jones, 55, was in serious condition at General Hospital after he struck Detective Jerome Helton with a wine bottle during an incident in which a forgery suspect fled. Detective Chief Clem Merz reported the plainclothes officer trained his revolver on the suspect.
Josephus Daniels, 85 year old publisher of the Raleigh News and Observer and former secretary of the Navy, remains in a dying condition in Raleigh. His physician Dr. Hubert Haywood calls the illness very very low as bronchitis developed a week ago with complications.
Three masked gunmen robbed the Broad Lincoln Hotel in Columbus early yesterday, escaping with 513 dollars in cash and 514 dollars in checks. Two employees were forced into a boiler room.
Police Lt. Harold Cooper said Albert Pugh, 7%, a night clerk at an Ohio River waterfront hotel, was beaten and robbed by a stranger who attacked him as he opened a room. Pugh died after suffering head injuries when he fell on an iron stove and was allegedly smothered with a mattress.
John Cusato aged 22 and Nancy Clague aged 20, both of Cleveland, were killed yesterday when their car was struck by a train at a crossing.
