Soviet armies pressed toward the Bug River with bombs dropping on German positions. The Berlin radio reported heavy U S bombers striking central Germany as Allied forces drive near the frontier, threatening Romania.
Count Galeazzo Ciano was shot to death today after his conviction on charges tied to his vote to use his father in law Benito Mussolini as Italian dictator. Allied and Axis actions fill a wartime news digest with battles and air raids across Europe and the Mediterranean.
Washington reports the Army Air Forces have reached peak unit strength and will shift to replacement training. Closing 69 air installations nationwide accounts for about five to seven percent of all AAF bases in the United States.

Rep Charles Halleck said the party would keep the military high command intact if elected, claiming a Republican victory could shorten the war.

He warned of price chaos by summer without renewal of stabilization and called for firm action to protect the dollar.
The President asserted there were no secret treaties or political commitments in postwar plans. He framed the goal as security in physical, economic, social, and moral terms, urged all out effort in 1944, and urged national service beyond politics with a fair for one, fair for all principle.
President Roosevelt calls for federal action to implement an economic Bill of Rights guaranteeing jobs, wages, home, health care, education, and security. He warns against selfish pressure groups and warns that prewar normalcy could revive fascism at home. He urges federal voting rights for soldiers and Marines before the next election.
Moscow radio broadcast a declaration declaring no surrender of Ukrainian and White Russian lands, proposing the Curzon Line as a basis for a new Russian Polish border. It mentions possible Polish participation with the Soviet Union in a regional security pact and criticizes the Polish government-in-exile. Poles in London offered no immediate comment.
