Sleet storms and floods menace most sections of Ohio as a heavy snowstorm moves in from the West and Northwest. A frigid wave is expected to reduce the flood threat temporarily while ice disrupts communication and power lines and slows rail and highway travel.
The Hocking River rose about four feet in 24 hours but is not expected to reach flood stage. Gauge keeper Mrs. C N France says the river, within three feet of flood level at noon, should stop rising due to cold upper valley weather. Current reading fourteen and a half feet. flood stage is seventeen feet.
Northern and Northwestern Ohio faced ice coated cities and downed lines with traffic near standstill. Rivers rose then froze, threatening floods averted as cold eased. Ohio River at Cincinnati rose to 38 feet while Great Lakes area reports outages and halted air service. Temperature midwinter extremes predicted tonight.
Neva Finley Paris 36 of Great Neck New York a nationally known aviatrix was killed when her plane crashed into a marsh near Woodbine along the Satilla River She was en route to Miami to participate in an air derby next week Paris had placed fifth in the previous Women's National Air Derby last summer and had begun her trip from Great Neck last week in short hops.
Frank Hall a Logan County criminal serving five years for shooting a state trooper and bootlegging scaled the walls of the Moundsville State Penitentiary and escaped. He had earlier escaped from a train in 1928 and was recaptured in Indianapolis last October. Matron Adda Wickham witnessed him crawl over the wall but he vanished before warnings could reach authorities.

In Stockton California on January 10 a family of three led by Mr John Nightingale and his seven year old son were rescued after five days snowbound at Niagara Creek. She accused lawmakers of wasting taxpayers money and violated the Bill of Rights, prompting laughter from the room. She named associates and accused publicists of media influence while asserting sugar interests dominate Congress.
