At Holloway jail on Tuesday morning Bywaters and Mrs. Thompson were executed for the murder of Percy Thompson in a case of illicit love. Reports say Mrs. Thompson plotted to kill her husband for the younger man, with Bywaters protesting his innocence to the end as guards hid the scene from nearby rooftops.
Ohio Governor Donahey told a joint session that at least 6 million dollars a year can be saved by reforms. He called for enforcing uniform taxation, abolishing tax commissions, shifting to local control over taxes and debt, and transferring the automobile registration unit to the penitentiary with March 1 licensing.
O P Van Sweringen and associates await Interstate Commerce Commission approval to serve as directors of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Pending stock-transfer contracts with Huntington interests, they plan a merger of C and O with five other Van Sweringen controlled lines into a Nickel Plate system of about 6000 miles.
W. H. Atkins reports that Britain will use global markets to pay its 500 million dollar debt to the United States. Stanley Baldwin states that gold repayment is impractical and Britain will seek payment in goods, leveraging worldwide trade to ease liquidation and avoid being seen as a bad debtor. he criticizes the new tariff law as hindering such plans.
The Holloway jail hanging of Mrs. Thompson spurred anti capital punishment sentiment. A woman with a sandwich board condemned the act calling judges murderers. Ramsay MacDonald warned executions may inflame passions and fail to purify domestic life.
Ralph M. Pavey was unanimously appointed Athens county farm bureau agent at a special meeting on Monday. District supervisor W. W. Brownfield praised his experience and explained why W. W. Montgomery could not serve. Pavey, a native of Ohio, has farm agency work in Idaho on his resume and will relocate to Athens to begin duties January 15.
In Steubenville Ohio William Whittaker a meat dealer is under arrest for manslaughter in the death of John J. Dugan a Pennsylvania railroad conductor struck by a high powered machine last week. A warrant is out for Vincent Kelly a prominent athlete.
Police prepare murder charge against Frank Goettling for the beating death of Harry Keim at a Cleveland hardware store. He is said to be drafting a full confession and may clear up unsolved Parma double teacher murders and Mrs. Helen Silberger’s death from May 12.
M A Kraus former Meigs Savings and Loan secretary pleaded guilty in Meigs County Common Pleas Court to forgery. Judge Miller sentenced him to one to twenty years in the Ohio penitentiary. George Kraus Sr. is already in prison and Susan Kraus remains in Marysville reform school. Mike is the last of the family to be tried.
In Paris the Allied reparations commission declares Germany in default on coal deliveries under Versailles. French forces move toward Essen from Dusseldorf as De Goutte and Berthelot establish headquarters in Düsseldorf. Germany warns of possible Versailles void if France advances. Britain adopts a wait-and-see stance.
Official word that the Steel & Tube Co of America has been acquired, with plants in Chicago and multiple midwest and western cities, announced by James A. Campbell president of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co in Youngstown Ohio.
Report from London says the commander of the British army of occupation in Cologne asked the French not to encroach on British occupied territory.
The Copeland Class Six Chorus performs tonight in a revival at Central Avenue. Members join for one evening of song at the community event hosted on Central Avenue.
Federal agents thwarted a drive by five men to kidnap Addie May Hamilton near Mer Rouge Louisiana as justice officials linked the attempt to Ku Klux Klan members aiming to stop her from testifying in the hooded mob murder trial. Witness Harold Teegerstrom remains missing after a prior kidnaping. Hamilton had just given the International News Service an exclusive account and named two alleged kidnappers.
A two story frame factory at the General Bronze Foundry Co in East Cleveland caught fire today. The blaze fully enveloped the building before 10 o clock and all East End firefighting units were sent to contain the flames.
A two month old dog at Issor near Pau bit its master Monsieur Camros, his six children, and a domestic. The victims were taken to the Pasteur Institute of Bordeaux where their prognosis is hopeful.
Ravenna Ohio January 9 Mrs Margaret Carlile of Kent freed after indictment for her husband’s murder last April was released as Prosecuting Attorney J L Heisler said the evidence did not justify conviction.
The Senate adopted the conference report on the navy appropriation bill providing 325.9 million dollars for the next fiscal year. The measure sets funding for naval programs and operations and advances the annual defense spending package.

Charles Seidenable of Pomeroy died after his car collided with a Vale and Miller coal truck on the Rutland cement road near Cook's Gap. The 38 year old miner, driving alone at high speed, died before reaching Pomeroy and the body was taken to his parents home.
Final annual report by retiring coroner Dr. A. C. Adams says four deaths in Allen county were alcohol related. One death resulted directly from synthetic liquor and three from bootleg beverage use. Dr. Jank Smith to succeed Adams on January 1.
Amherst report says John Roth is expected to recover after a horse he tried to feed kicked him striking his head and fracturing his skull. The incident occurred in Amherst on January 9.
London January 9 Premier A Bonar Law called a cabinet meeting for Thursday to discuss the European situation following the collapse of the reparations conference in Paris.
Malta report says additional British naval forces are being concentrated in Turkish waters under orders from the British Admiralty.
The French foreign office rejected Washington’s claim that Secretary Hughes had formally transmitted a plan for an international bankers commission on reparations to France and denied that the United States had formally objected to the seizure of the something obliquely referenced in the report.
