Ways and Means members back health plan for House vote

A Associated Press survey shows most of the 25 member Ways and Means Committee favor sending the administration health plan to the House for a vote. Mills expects action in March with a 17 to 8 party split after reconstitution. The package includes a regional medical complex system and financing by a payroll tax.

Blaze damages Point Pleasant resort construction site

A morning fire at the Pleasant Point Resort construction site along Route 62 north of Point Pleasant caused about 20 000 dollars in damage to equipment and a storage building. Manager William Marcum said plumbing electrical gear tile and wood building were lost. Firefighters returned to refill their 1200 gallon tanker and ruled the blaze started from a coal stove.

Ohio to Spend Billion on Higher Education Budget Record

The Rhodes administration unveils a two year education budget totaling about a billion dollars. Of this, $693 million funds elementary and secondary schools and $235 million supports Ohio’s 53 colleges and universities. General funds total about $798 million with other sources listed. the plan targets full access to college education for all Ohio youths. The package awaits legislative action around February 1. Air Force Vet Faces Spy Charge in Soviet Case

Robert Glenn Thompson, 29, an Air Force veteran, is charged with selling military secrets to the Soviet Union with three Russians. One Russian co conspirator, Boris V. New Trial Granted After Four Decades in Akron Case

Leroy Dunlap, who lived 44 years under threat of death, was granted a new trial by Common Pleas Court Judge Stephen C. Colopy. Convicted of first degree murder in 1920, the jury did not recommend mercy, making the death sentence mandatory, but Dunlap fled jail, served in the armed forces under an alias, and was arrested last fall. The motion for a new trial, filed in 1920 and supplemented recently, was granted today.
