January Jail Sentence Ordered by Judge Miller
Judge Miller presided over the January term of the circuit court in Point Pleasant, sentencing William Sprouse of West Columbia to 90 days in the county jail for felonious assault on George Garrison of the General Chemical Defense Corporation. The case stemmed from an Aug 5, 1944 incident at the West Virginia Coal and Transportation Co. office. Sprouse’s attorney urged fines citing his value to local war industry. Miller emphasized protecting individual liberty and noted Garrison worked 16 hours a day. The term also heard a not guilty verdict in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Frank Gill and a reduced award in a civil suit from $169 to $100 in Foglesong vs Yester for vehicle collision damages at Third and Viand Streets. Miss Foglesong’s car had the right of way but was required to exercise due caution. Jury included W. M. Ball, V. Weigland, R. Beller, H. Amick, J. Mash, A. B. Hume, T. F. Walden, C. Blount, E. Higginbotham, R. King, W. Weaver, and J V Morrison.
