In the Mekong Delta a 605 man American task force attacked a Viet Cong company in a marsh bunker complex. The enemy, believed to be 100 plus, lost 48 with U S casualties at eight dead and 11 wounded. Survivors slipped away at dawn as helicopter and flare support hunted them.
On opening day in Columbus the Ohio General Assembly, facing cold and snow, tackled a controversial pair of bills. One would let city councils set up to 2 percent income tax without a vote, with higher rates needing election approval. A second measure gives municipalities three years to notify delinquents and six more to recover taxes. Major issues include funding for education, housing, and pollution control, and allocation of the state capital construction budget from Issue No. 1 proceeds.
Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky denied he authored a plan to split Vietnam peace talks into three sections. He said all Paris suggestions were approved in advance by President Nguyen Van Thieu and rejected foreign reports claiming he was the plan’s author.
Washington AP reports that despite the defeat of a bid to change an elector's vote the push for electoral reform continues. Dirksen and other lawmakers voiced optimism, with O’Hara signaling plans for a constitutional amendment and direct presidential election support.

New York based publisher Walter Annenberg is expected to be named by President-elect Nixon as ambassador to Britain. Nixon aides offered no public comment and expect any ambassador nominations after the January 20 inauguration. Speculation about former Senator Kenneth Keating as ambassador to Israel drew no comment.
Audrey Hepburn and Andrea Dotti filed intent to marry in the lakeside Swiss village of Tolochenaz. Hepburn, 39, formerly married to Mel Ferrer, and Dotti, 29, did not set a wedding date.
Sirhan Bishara Sirhan was to face trial in a guarded courtroom for the Kennedy murder with the defense hinting at a possible fourth postponement. Grant B. Cooper, among the defense team, stated delaying the trial might serve Sirhan’s interests as he prepared to answer a federal grand jury question or face contempt proceedings.
The Athens city council votes unanimously to pass the 1969 appropriations ordinance while delaying action on a parking fee increase. Earl Keefer is re elected president of the Mason County Board of Education.
