Washington sources report President Johnson pursues the peace offensive with a Christmas pause in North Viet Nam bombing. Collie Leroy Wilkins Jr. a Ku Klux Klansman acquitted in Liuzzo slaying begins a one year and one day federal prison term for probation violation. Wilkins and two others faced trial on murder charges. a federal jury later convicted all three of conspiring to violate civil rights in the Selma area.
Painesville Township police received a report that a thief tore up a 20 by 12 foot strip of carpeting installed by Paul Ginzell, a carpet shop operator, in front of his store two weeks into a planned month long wear test. The incident interrupted the trial of the product.
In Washington the Ku Klux Klan hearings reopen in the House caucus room with Rep. Edwin E. Willis leading the probe on un American activities. Louisiana is expected to top new areas of Klan scrutiny as investigators explore three offshoots in the state. Witnesses fear identification and many again invoke the Fifth Amendment as executive sessions yield cautious cooperation.
Kalamazoo bulletin reports Don Bowen age 40 head basketball coach at Western Michigan University announced his resignation effective at season end. Bowen will stay on WMU faculty as an instructor after eight seasons leading the Broncos in the Mid American Conference.
