Finsterwald Family Early Athens Settlers
The Finsterwalds have lived in Athens County for over 130 years with members prominent in farming politics and industry since settler John Finsterwald came from Switzerland with the Steigner party. They built a winter cabin on Federal Creek for 70 Swiss settlers, and many descendants held public roles including salt works, law enforcement, and county offices through the 19th and early 20th centuries.
