Congressman Cannon of Missouri warns against using national defense to justify a spending spree. He urges economizing on nonessential items, counters pork barrel expansion, and advocates balancing the budget despite reduced revenues while defense needs rise.
The Associated Press reports eight traffic fatalities and one fire death during the 30 hour holiday period in Ohio ending New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day. No miscellaneous deaths were logged and the statewide toll briefly led the nation before other states surpassed Ohio. Two pedestrian deaths occurred in different counties near Fremont and Lancaster within hours of each other.
The nation records a one day New Year toll of 146 surpassing the 130 forecast by the National Safety Council for a 30 hour period. Final counts incomplete with trended returns. Previous New Year high was 110 in 1947-48 and all time holiday peak 253 in 1946. Icy roads, snow and rain added travel hazards across the Midwest and New England.
Airman Edward L. Young of Philo Ohio Route 1 is to face a general court martial on involuntary manslaughter charges for the Sept 15 shooting at Kunsan base in Korea. One of two guards is linked to the case in which two Korean girls were involved and one died. co-defendant Airman Carroll D. Taylor of Cincinnati was convicted on a lesser charge and given nine months in prison.
A Winter Park family endured a 14 hour gunpoint seizure as three teenagers from San Antonio boarded their 40 foot Fiesta 1 yacht off the Keys New Year’s Eve demanding to go to Mexico. A note smuggled ashore brought rescue as deputies recovered the youths who surrendered after dropping their rifles overboard. Richard Sias and his wife Phyllis and their four children escaped unharmed. Officials weighed kidnapping and piracy charges against the youths.
Two women were shot in Columbus as New Year’s Day began. Both husbands are in custody for questioning. Sandra DeVere, 18, eight months pregnant, is in fair condition at St. Anthony Hospital after a party incident. Charles DeVere, 21, says he turned to open their car door when shots were fired. Mary Ann Patrick, 46, is in fair condition at White Cross Hospital after saying Vader Patrick, 51, attacked her with a bottle of liquor and fired.
Five people suffered minor burns and cuts when a gas leak caused an explosion that demolished a small bar in Corpus Christi Texas. Detective T J Despain asked a patron if he was hurt and the man replied that he would never drink there again.
The forecast calls for clear skies with cold air tonight and Friday. Lows dip to 8 to 12 degrees and highs reach 22 to 26 degrees.
Nelsonville police held four youths ages 11 to 15 on six breaking and entering counts and auto theft totaling over 2000 dollars. Investigators linked a cache including 14 pistols five rifles and gear to the juveniles and described their Thanksgiving hardware store break in and subsequent car thefts in nearby towns. The report notes further articles remain to be recovered and details two separate break ins with stolen vehicles used in later actions.
In a national broadcast President Marcos Perez Jimenez said government forces ended an air force revolt that began New Year’s Day with attacks from Maracay. In Culver City Charles ONeill age 50 was trapped in a burning home. Police officer Jack Whitehouse entered through smoke to pull ONeill out wearing only his birthday suit. ONeill fought rescue and swung a punch before accepting help. Whitehouse inhaled smoke and was hospitalized. Firemen blame a cigarette for the blaze.
Tuscarawas County Coroner Philip Doughton plans tests to learn more about a human skeleton found Wednesday in an old Martins Ferry Glove Co storage building. The skeleton wrapped in a newspaper and burlap bag was discovered on the second floor by two boys while they played there.
New York City became $2.88 richer after Mayor Robert F. Wagner swore in 45 incumbent commissioners and two new appointees at City Hall. A century old city statute requires each commissioner to pay a 6 cent filing fee before taking office.
Louisville couple Robert and Joenna Greene welcomed their daughter Karen Lynn Greene at 12 00 01 a m New Year Day at St Mary and Elizabeth Hospital. The birth caused them to miss a year's income tax deduction by two seconds.
