President Johnson signed a 4.4 billion public works bill saying part may be unconstitutional. He disputed a provision barring the Panama Canal Co. from disposing of real property without congressional approval. He would treat the clause as a request for information instead of a veto trigger.
The widow of Lee Harvey Oswald confirms he told her he was involved in the shooting at Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker. She described a note from Oswald predicting possible arrest and stated he admitted involvement after returning home very late.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and his wife Happy announced through his office that their next child is due in early June 1964. The statement notes Rockefeller, 55, and Happy, 36, wed last May and mark his second marriage following a 1962 divorce from his first wife.
Gen. David M. Shoup turns over command to Lt. Gen. Wallace M. Greene at a retirement ceremony in Washington. Shoup, Medal of Honor recipient for Tarawa, ends 33-year career as Marine Commandant after four years in the post. Greene becomes 23rd commandant, to pin on four stars Wednesday.
Gov. George Romney announced a January 7 address before the National Press Club in Washington to discuss Republican national goals. He said he would speak on opportunities for right programs and noted he is increasing invitations to speak on national topics while denying any plans to run for the GOP nomination.
Wall Street celebrated New Year's Eve with a brisk stock market rally as volume reached 6.73 million shares. The Dow Jones rose 3.05 to 762.95, ending below its mid session peak. In Madrid officials abandon 10,146 ton freighter Castillo de Montjuich and its crew of 37 as lost.
Ohio liquor director Donald D. Cook said total 1963 liquor sales are projected at 227 million dollars, a conservative estimate beating 1962’s 223.15 million and approaching the 1957 peak of 223.70 million. Officials note the department will cut liquor debt by about 25 million from 65 million.
In New York Dr Herbert L Gould prescribes a hangover remedy of one ounce cognac in three ounces champagne. He says cognac acts as a stimulant and champagne gives necessary tone and a feeling of gaiety to the weary.
Richard K. Burlin of Chatham Mass. captured the 1963 World Champion Liar title at Burlington Wis. in the 35th annual contest. His winning free style tale claimed fishing was so bad that even the biggest liars didn’t catch any. John Legette of Charlotte N C. earned honorable mention with a muddy Catawba River quip.
Detroit broadcast quotes Teamsters President James Hoffa denying officials offered him a deal in federal court cases. Hoffa says government representatives allegedly pressured him and aides to resign in exchange for dropping grand jury actions. He faces charges in Tennessee for jury tampering and in Chicago for conspiracy to fraudulently obtain $20 million in Teamster funds.
Reedville Belleville Locks and Dam work in the $70 million project slowed Tuesday as temperatures hindered concrete pouring. A union spokesman denied knowledge of a strike and said stoppage stemmed from cold. Dravo Corp officials planned a meeting with the union but offered no comment on the cause. company spokesmen were unavailable.
Prop Joseph W. Martin Jr. of Massachusetts, former Speaker and longtime GOP leader, likely will depart Bethesda Naval Hospital Friday after a weeklong stay for a virus infection, aides reported Tuesday.
Columbus James A. Rhodes granted Lawson E. Schaber of Toledo a 60 day reprieve Tuesday. Schaber, 25, remains under sentence to die in Ohio Penitentiary electric chair for first degree murder.
