National guardsmen and volunteers search dawn for about 400 missing as 61 are confirmed dead in Buffalo Creek hollow West Virginia. Dam breach following heavy rain wiped out 14 coal camps, leaving thousands homeless and prompting federal disaster aid.
President Nixon landed at Anchorage after a week in China where he pledged to withdraw from Taiwan someday and expand bilateral ties. The trip, first by a sitting U.S. president, aims to bridge decades of hostility while Washington and Beijing negotiate trade exchanges and cultural contacts.
Retired miner Jack Riley sought his car and license plate after a crushing flash flood ripped through 14 coal camps along Buffalo Creek in Logan County. He said he always expected such a disaster and scrambled to salvage belongings, including his clothes.
Riley, a 62 year old resident of Stowe, survived when his house was washed away by the flood after heavy rains. He links the disaster to runoff from surface mining above a slate dump pond.
