Kent State University Student Council defeated a motion 23 to 4 to require campus fraternities and sororities to remove discriminatory membership clauses by January 1962. Three of the university’s 25 Greek organizations include such clauses. The vote preserves existing prejudices in the constitution of three groups.
In Cincinnati Lemuel Lon Trotter 31 faces first degree murder charges in the death of a city detective. His lawyers request a psychiatric exam and plea details. In Canton Harry Bundy 39 is tied to first degree murder. Stark County grand jury heard evidence. In Youngstown Edwin Stanley former city attorney was sentenced to 120 years for forgery and embezzlement. In Dayton Fred Johnson 40 is convicted of second degree murder for the Nov 11 1956 shooting of Charles Lewis after a lengthy jury deliberation.
Mrs Genevieve Race aged 88 died from injuries after being hit by a car Sunday night in Cincinnati. In Ashland authorities searched the Ohio River for the body of Joe Dishman 26 of Coal Grove believed to have fallen from a moored barge. Forest E Stanley 25 of Akron was killed in an explosion at the B F Goodrich research center in Brecksville Ohio Wednesday.
A bill in the Ohio House, introduced by Rep. Thomas L. Thomas, would narrow divorce grounds to adult ery and imprisonment in a fed eral or state institution, removing willful absence for a year and impotence as grounds. Also, a separate measure urged by the Ohio Education and Health Committee seeks 178 instructional days per year for students, replacing the current 180 days with holidays excluded.
In Scranton three Air Force officers Col Ralph O Brownfield Col Charles F Burley and Robert E McNett president of Royal Electric were named in a federal grand jury conspiracy indictment over government contracts for the Jamestown and Dayton firms. Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co workers resume work today after ratifying a 16 month contract. Washington report says a third installment of James B. Elkins’s story on rackets in Portland Ore was to be heard by a special Senate committee. Sporn will begin construction of a 450000 kilowatt steam electric generating unit at Graham Station in April. The plant, to be completed in 1959, will cost about 58 million dollars. Sollitt Construction Co. of South Bend Indiana is the general contractor.
A House bill would require the state to cover utility relocation costs if the federal government funds part of a highway project.
