Washington reports former president Dwight D. Eisenhower is recovering smoothly at Walter Reed General Hospital. Doctors warn he must be watched closely over the next two weeks for possible complications while his condition improves.
Columbus today reports a scheduled hearing in Athens County to resolve a dispute involving the county engineer’s office. The section also notes Ohio Assembly education debates and a six part War on Poverty series in Southeastern Ohio. Gerry McKee scores as Ohio defeats Northern Illinois and tops OU scoring.
Nixon aims to renew the special American British relationship during a 16 hour visit to London. He met with Wilson and other leaders at No 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace to discuss East West ties NATO Europe Market and the Vietnam era.
In Columbus the Rio Senate is expected to introduce a resolution to lower the voting age to 19 and treat 19-year-olds as adults for contracts and other age-based rules. Gov Rhodes backs the plan along with both parties. House debate on state holidays and fluoridation also looms as floor action proceeds. A 29-3 Senate vote approved bonds for county hospitals after a lengthy session.
A three day rainstorm drove evacuations totaling about 6000 people in six counties from Fresno to the coast. Santa Paula evacuated 4000 as floodwaters swamped the town and creeks. Riverside San Bernardino Orange and San Luis Obispo counties opened Red Cross relief centers.
Saigon reports about 200 American deaths in three days of Viet Cong offensive with hundreds wounded. Allied spokesmen say enemy losses exceed 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops. South Vietnamese casualties include 340 killed and 1,063 wounded as attacks extend across 50 towns.
At Columbus West High School 74 pupils were arrested and suspended for trespassing after a noontime disruption by about 90 students. Principal David Randall and officials received strong backing from Supt. Harold H. Eibling and the school board. One 18 year old faced additional charges. most juveniles were released to parents.
