Washington scenes heat up as rumors spread about a possible peace between Russia and Finland. Congressmen, government workers, Manpower Chief Paul V. McNutt, and presidential appointees crowd the capital sharing the heat and chatter.
The Office of Defense Transportation chief Joseph B. Eastman warned that by year end the rubber transportation crisis would worsen. He urged cutting passenger car mileage to the bone, aligning with the Baruch Committee’s findings.
Chicago AP report says a hemispheric prayer crusade to win the war will launch March 12 in over 1,100 Roman Catholic churches. Rev Terence A Seery said the event starts in churches where the Novena to Our Sorrowful Mother is held each Friday. 1,010 churches in the United States and 156 abroad.
One hundred fifty ALCOA striking smelter workers were told by the Regional War Labor Board to return to their jobs today or face automatic discharge. The stoppage began after five furnace tenders were discharged by order of the Army Air Force following recurring slowdowns at ALCOA.

War Ration Books No. 2 were issued to 4,792 people at Athens schools by Wednesday. Superintendent Harper C. Pendry reports 1,602 on Wednesday and 3,190 over the previous two days. Registration continues at four elementary schools and Athens High School will stay open tonight. Pendry warns the process ends Friday at 6 PM with no high school registrations that night.
U S fighter planes of the Tenth Air Force engaged in battles over the Burmese Mountains near Assam Air Field. They shot down six enemy aircraft and probably destroyed twelve more while suffering no losses. Also news notes temporary price ceilings set on broom corn and Gandhi’s fast entering the 16th day of a 21 day fast.
Five House committees including Dies and Appropriations plan inquiries into 3,000,000 civilian federal workers draft deferments. The investigations target loyalty and need for service amid drives to purge subversive influence from government payroll.

The New York regional Office of Price Administration directed that all car owners without 1945 plates or with stored autos return their gasoline ration books to local ration boards. The office serves New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Delaware Maryland and the District of Columbia.
The Office of Price Administration set March quotas in Ohio at 2 525 new passenger autos with a February figure of 2 921 and a 328 car emergency reserve. Ohio also allocated 3 647 adult bicycles with a reserve of 1 094 noted.
