Almost 95 percent of food on American tables is under price control as the OPA orders a week long pre rationing freeze on five vegetables tomatoes beans carrots cabbage and peas. The ceiling applies from Feb 18 to 22 and may extend to corn spinach celery and lettuce with a permanent program due in 60 days.
The Navy announced the sinking of a German submarine in the Atlantic and a Japanese sub in the Pacific. The German U boat was sunk in a fight with a destroyer while the Japanese was destroyed by the armed guard of an American merchant vessel it torpedoed.
Cleveland regional War Manpower Committee moves to protect seniority for workers who transfer from non-deferable to essential jobs. Robert C. Goodwin says committees should set up protection plans to guarantee seniority when workers return to old positions.
Stockholm reports Finland, weary from war, is ready to seek peace with Soviet Russia on terms that guarantee Finland's freedom and independence since the first World War. Reliable sources in Stockholm expect terms to protect Finnish sovereignty.
The Army authorized the first use of military units as emergency farm labor. Troops in Arizona are to assist in harvesting the long staple cotton crop.
Cleveland AP report notes aluminum alloy ingot production at Aluminum Co. of America stopped as about 60 second-shift workers joined first and third shifts in a sympathy strike. The sit down began after five foundry tenders were discharged on Air Force orders. Army investigator George Wildey said the dismissals were ordered for not meeting wartime qualifications.
Washington Roosevelt may meet strong Republican and some Democratic opposition in Congress if he seeks to extend the authority to trim the gold content of the dollar and maintain the stabilization fund. Powers expire June 30 and without action the dollar would be fixed at 155-21 grains of gold nine tenths fine and the stabilization funds revert to the general fund.
An Ohio legislative source says action on repealing the food sales tax will wait until the $369 million biennial appropriation bill clears, with a $2.8 million yearly school subsidy increase tied to it. House aims to vote on March 1, then Senate passage within two weeks before adjournment.
American war news reports more than 850 dead or missing after two passenger cargo ships were torpedoed in the North Atlantic within four days. Navy officials withheld ship names and noted the heavy toll was mainly Army Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel. An 18 year old Akron University freshman Robert Dabney Jr died after a head wound suffered while he and five companions practiced commando tactics with blackened faces and small calibre rifles in a woods near Akron. Detective Gobel Waddell reported the incident.
The OPA announced wholesale egg prices will be fixed to lower immediate consumer costs while pushing the yearly average price up about one to two cents per dozen. A fixed mark up regulation will determine the consumer price.
